Cyberjam: Music devices & How to take my music to the next Level

So, I’ve been eyeing Access Virus units for a while. I think I’m torn between the Virus TI Desktop and the Virus TI Snow. If I could find a Virus TI Polar for below $1500, I’d get it. I think I found one on the craigslist in San Diego, but I’d have to ask the guy if he’s willing to ship it to dallas. I was researching the Snow to see if it was as capable as the desktop Virus TI model, when I ran across the Tenori-On used a controller for the Virus TI Snow.

ORLY, I thought. What a fantastic concept. Because Virus TI Desktops and Polars start at about $2,200-$2,500, I’d have to go with a Snow if I wanted a new unit. Otherwise I have to snipe auctions and search the net for a decent price. I’m working a lead here in dallas. I might be able to get a Virus TI Desktop(used) for $1,000. If the guy goes for it, consider it bought.
I’m still trying to sell my eVolver.
Most all synthesizers can be controlled remotely via MIDI. So I have a 49key keyboard controlling my Softsynths(computer based synthesizers) and my hardware synths. I’ve never owned a synthesizer with a built in keyboard. A Virus TI Polar would be the first (if i went that route). The Virus TI Snow and Desktop are both module units without keyboards. They are meant to be controlled via MIDI. So here’s more about some of the things I’ve been looking at lately

Tenori-On:

http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/index.html

http://www.tenori-onusa.com/

It just seems like $1,000 is a lot for a synthesizer matrix/grid. It is the most intuitive synthesizer I’ve seen. It really changes the game for me as far as improv and composition go.  THE BIGGEST!!!! THING about a tenori-on, is that you can use it as a controller for bigger, badder, more awesome synths. That is beyond worth it for me. If you look at how much money I’ve invested in various midi controllers (i’m counting ones that I’ve bought and sold), we’re talking about $900 over the years. Now this would be an addition, but this would bring so much more creative potential. With my ADHD(even medicated), this brings a DIRECT approach to composition. I don’t have to set a bunch of stuff up to get going. I just start pressing dots… I can defend the idea of investing in one of these, all day long.

And some Little Boots (I seriously love her now. I discovered her on the tenori-on watching musician videos. She has all the gear I want… hahaha)

In the clip below, the artist is using the monome to trigger clips/samples and he has the tenori-on providing the melody.
Tenori-on & Monome:

Monome 40h + Tenori-On from Arctic Sunrise on Vimeo.

Melodica:
I paid $0.99 for Melodica. I run audio outs from my headphone jack and into my audio interface (Motu ultralite) to record my song builds and/or samples. Beyond the obvious cost of the iPhone itself, this application has the Highest $to Creative potential ratio I can think of.
The Interface looks like this:

This is the composition screen.

This is the composition screen.

This is the Save / Load screen and you can preview the track before you load it up.

You just slide your finger left to right across the screen to switch tracks.

Tonematrix:

Now wouldn’t be awesome, if someone made an application like this (COME ON NATIVE INSTRUMENTS OR ABLETON!!!!) that could also remotely trigger a hardware synth or softsynth? You could easily change your grid parameters adding more rows, etc. That would be a mega awesome investment. You just assign an instrument/note to each row.

Arduinome/Monome:
The Arduinome & Monome are heavily dependent on community generated software and code to make them run, they are not the ideal content generators I am looking for, but they may be the least expensive out of everything. It is, and always will be, just a midi controller. I want more.

Fringe Operating Systems

I love it when customers pick fringe operating systems and don’t know how they work.

[23:32:01] customer : I just received my new server, and had selected openSuse 11.x (x64) as the OS, but ended up with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES 11). I’m not sure if that’s a mis-labelling or not, but I really do need openSuse 11.1 (64 bit) due do to its more plentiful repositories. I opened a ticket with tech support, but they recommended asking sales if that OS is availavle. Can you reinstall it?
[23:32:02] me : Two questions: What is your account login? and did you know that you can easily add repositories in either?
[23:32:32] me : I used 10 for a little while
[23:32:49] customer : What?
[23:32:58] me : What is your account login?
[23:33:07] customer : xxxxxxxx
[23:34:24] me : Opensuse and SLES are like CentOS and RHEL, in the fact that Open suse is compiled from SLES’s source and relogoed
[23:35:07] me : Hence the name
[23:35:17] me : So any opensuse repo’s work on SLES without any problems
[23:35:22] me : You just have to manually add them.
[23:35:33] me : And force the installs.
[23:35:54] customer : Really? OK, I’ll try that. Thanks…
[23:35:57] me : Thank you for contacting XXXXX. Have a great day! Good bye!

Video Blog Repost, Had to restore the site

Due to some unexpected website maintenance, I had to restore my site to last week’s backup. Luckily I only lost video posts which remain on youtube.

Incase you missed my posts from this week, here they are:

Post UFC 100:

Random post fight thoughts.

Monday update:

Camera work isn’t getting any better. Finally got the washer and dryer over via U-Haul truck. It ended up being a big production with James requesting a mid day break to have lunch with his family. We eventually got them moved in and installed. Uhaul bill came out to $50. My new Kaoss Pad arrived. Its fun. Ebay listings: http://bit.ly/c5ijD … More going up on sunday.

UFC 97 Results

Well, Shogun, Krzysztof, and Anderson won. I’m happy about that. A lot more decisions than I expected. I’ll bold my picks incase you didn’t read my last blog. 7/11 isn’t bad.

OFFICIAL RESULTS

  • Anderson Silva def. Thales Leites via unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 50-46)
  • Sam Stout def. Matt Wiman via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Mauricio “Shogun” Rua def. Chuck Liddell via TKO (strikes) – Round 1, 4:28
  • Krzysztof Soszynski def. Brian Stann via submission (kimura) – Round 1, 3:53
  • Cheick Kongo def. Antoni Hardonk via TKO (strikes) – Round 2, 2:29
  • Luiz Cane def. Steve Cantwell via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

PRELIMINARY CARD RESULTS

  • Denis Kang def. Xavier Foupa-Pokam via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Nate Quarry def. Jason MacDonald via TKO (strikes) – Round 1, 2:27
  • Ed Herman def. David Loiseau via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Mark Bocek def. David Bielkheden via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 1, 4:57
  • T.J. Grant def. Ryo Chonan via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)
  • Eliot Marshall def. Vinicius Magalhaes via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

Just so you guys know, i pick a lot of round 2/round4 stuff. It gives the fighters 1 round to feel out the opponent, and then they can KO them in the second round. Anderson Silva has been taking a more Lyoto Machida approach to everything now, and he’s a fan of wearing out his opponent and knocking them out in later rounds instead of a quick KO, from the interviews I’ve seen as of late.

ARGGHH

Chis brought over an interesting looker tonight. We made fun of a guy who tried to hit on her today. Then I gave her examples of what I would have done differently. And she said mine are much better for conversational progression. Normally I would have been in the ABC mindset (always be closing), but I didn’t think it go anywhere. This chick was pretty hot, and ended up being flirty. Probably missed my chance to legitimately hit on her.

I made her laugh. “Nice star tattoos. Do you have stars anywhere else?” I wasn’t inferring anything terrible with it, but she caught the double entedre.

CRAP. And then I felt like calling rachel, because she’s good at making me feel better about myself.
